Communication & Pings Guide
Master team coordination through effective pings, chat wheel usage, and positive communication
Why Communication Wins Games
Communication is Your Competitive Edge
Dota 2 is a team game. Even the best individual player cannot win alone against a coordinated team. Effective communication through pings, chat wheel, and voice provides the following advantages:
- Coordinate ganks and teamfights
- Call missing enemies to prevent deaths
- Secure objectives like Roshan and towers
- Share crucial information instantly
- Build team morale and cohesion
In high-level Dota 2, teams with superior communication consistently outperform mechanically skilled teams that don't communicate. A single missing call can save a teammate. A well-timed "Push now" can win the game. This guide will teach you how to communicate like a professional player.
Ping Types and Meanings
Dota 2 offers multiple ping types to convey different information quickly. Understanding and using the right ping type is essential for clear communication.
Normal Ping
Alt + Left Click
General purpose ping for drawing attention to a location, item, or information.
Common Uses:
- Marking ward locations
- Indicating enemy positions
- Highlighting items in shop or inventory
- Showing paths or movement intentions
- Alt-clicking abilities to show cooldowns
- Alt-clicking inventory to show gold/items
Attack Ping
Ctrl + Alt + Left Click
Aggressive ping signaling your team to attack or push a target.
Common Uses:
- Calling for ganks on enemy heroes
- Signaling tower push
- Marking Roshan for team
- Indicating initiation target in teamfights
- Showing enemy you want to kill
Danger Ping
Chat Wheel or Manual
Warning ping to alert teammates of immediate threats.
Common Uses:
- Warning of incoming ganks
- Alerting to missing enemies
- Indicating dangerous areas
- Warning before enemy initiation
- Signaling retreat from bad fights
X Mark / Retreat
Chat Wheel
Clear signal to retreat or avoid an area.
Common Uses:
- Calling for team to back
- Marking unsafe farming locations
- Indicating don't fight here
- Warning against bad engagements
- Stopping overextension
Acknowledge / Smiley
Chat Wheel
Positive confirmation or acknowledgment.
Common Uses:
- Confirming you're ready
- Acknowledging teammate calls
- Agreeing with strategy
- Positive reinforcement
- Showing you understand the plan
Help Request
Chat Wheel
Request for teammate assistance.
Common Uses:
- Requesting gank in your lane
- Asking for defensive TP
- Calling for help while being dived
- Requesting support during farm
- Asking for backup before fight
Ping Etiquette
Don't spam pings! Excessive pinging annoys teammates and clutters communication. Use 1-2 pings maximum for any callout. Spam pinging (3+ rapid pings) should only be used for critical, immediate threats like enemy smoke ganks or base race situations.
Ping timing matters: Ping early for missing enemies, but not so early that information becomes stale. Ping objectives when your team can actually respond, not when it's too late.
Chat Wheel Mastery
The chat wheel is Dota 2's most powerful communication tool. It allows instant callouts without typing, works across language barriers, and can be used while channeling abilities or moving. Press Y to open your primary chat wheel.
Essential Chat Wheel Commands
Missing!
Call missing enemies from your lane immediately. Most important support callout.
Get Back!
Warning that teammates are in danger or overextending.
Push Now!
Call for immediate tower push or highground attempt.
Gather for Smoke
Tell team to group for smoke gank.
Roshan
Signal Roshan attempt or enemy Roshan suspicion.
Affirmative / OK
Confirm that you agree or acknowledge the plan.
Negative / Wait
Disagree with plan or ask team to wait.
Well Played!
Positive reinforcement for good plays.
Careful!
General warning of potential danger.
We need wards
Request observer ward placement.
Stun now!
Call for immediate disable usage.
Requesting a gank
Ask for teammate to gank your lane.
Customizing Your Chat Wheel
You can customize chat wheel options in Settings → Options → Chat Wheel. Recommended customizations include:
- Item/Ability callouts: "Blink Dagger ready", "Black King Bar ready", "Ultimate ready"
- Strategic calls: "Group up", "Spread out", "Farm", "Defend"
- Timing information: "Buyback ready", "Buyback down", "Returning to base"
- Objective calls: "Take tower", "Defend tower", "Roshan", "Push highground"
Alt-Click Communication
Alt-clicking is Dota 2's most versatile communication feature. You can alt-click almost anything to share information instantly with your team.

Shows current HP percentage
Items & Economy
Shows current gold and how much needed for item
Shows item name and cooldown if applicable
Shows item you want to buy or save for
Shows items being delivered
Announces buyback ready or on cooldown
Shows next item you're building toward
Map & Objectives
Shows Roshan respawn window or alive status
Shows when Glyph will be ready
Shows wards available or restock time

Shows current game time and day/night cycle
Suggests attacking that building
Enemy Information
Alerts team to dangerous enemy items (BKB, Blade Mail, etc.)
Shows if enemy ability is on cooldown
Alerts team to level disadvantages
Shows if enemy has buyback available
Pro Alt-Click Tips
- Alt-click enemy items constantly: When enemy gets BKB, Blink, or key items, spam alt-click them so team is aware
- Share your cooldowns: Alt-click your ultimate before fights so team knows if you can fight
- Economy transparency: Alt-click your gold to show how far from key items (BKB, Blink, Buyback)
- Missing discipline: Alt-click enemy portraits immediately when they leave lane, and again when they return
- Buyback communication: Always alt-click buyback status before major fights and after using it
Missing Calls and Timing
Missing Calls Save Lives
Call missing within 3 seconds
When an enemy leaves your lane, you have approximately 3 seconds to call missing before they can reach another lane. The faster you call missing, the more time teammates have to react and survive.
When to Call Missing
Enemy Leaves Lane
Call immediately when enemy disappears from vision. Don't wait to confirm where they're going - teammates need time to react.
Enemy Rotates Visible
Call with direction when you see enemy rotating to other lanes through wards or vision.
Enemy Returns
Call returned by alt-clicking enemy portrait again when they reappear in lane. This tells team the gank threat is over.
Extended Missing
Repeat missing every 15-20 seconds if enemy stays missing for extended period. Team might forget or new rotations could occur.
Multiple Missing
Call all missing when multiple enemies disappear. This often indicates smoke gank or coordinated rotation.
Smoke Detected
Spam danger pings when enemy smoke is detected by wards or visible heroes. This is critical emergency communication.
Missing Call Priority by Role
Mid Lane (Highest Priority)
Mid missing calls are most critical. Mid heroes can rotate to either side lane quickly and often have high kill potential at level 6+.
Call at: Any disappearance, TP usage, rune movement
Supports (High Priority)
Support rotations are constant. Call when roaming supports leave lane or visible positions.
Call at: Leaving lane, smoke purchases, ward missions
Offlane (Medium Priority)
Offlane heroes can rotate to mid or jungle. Less urgent than mid but still important.
Call at: TP usage, extended absences, jungle rotations
Carry (Lower Priority)
Carries usually stay in lane farming. Still call missing but less likely to result in immediate ganks.
Call at: TP rotations, significant movements, team fight joins
Missing Call Timing Windows
Understanding rotation times helps teammates react appropriately:
- 0-10 seconds: Enemy could be in jungle, securing rune, or returning
- 10-20 seconds: Enemy likely rotating to another lane or objective
- 20-30 seconds: Enemy has reached destination or is TPing
- 30+ seconds: Enemy is definitely elsewhere - keep calling until they reappear
Smoke and Roshan Coordination
Smoke Gank Communication
Successful smoke ganks require clear communication before, during, and after execution. Poor communication leads to failed smokes, wasted time, and lost opportunities.
Pre-Smoke (30-60 seconds before)
During Smoke (35 seconds duration)
Post-Smoke
Roshan Coordination
Taking Roshan requires more communication than any other objective. One missed callout can result in lost Aegis, team wipe, or game loss.
Pre-Roshan Setup (1-2 minutes before)
- "Roshan" on chat wheel to announce intention
- Vision status: "We need wards" or alt-click observer stock
- Deward confirmation: Ping Roshan area after placing sentries, confirm "Area is clear"
- Enemy positions: Call out all visible enemies. "2 enemies top", "Mid missing", etc.
- Scan check: Alt-click scan, use it to clear Roshan pit before entering
- Buyback status: Everyone alt-click buyback status. Know who can buyback if contest happens
- Aegis carrier decision: "I'll take Aegis" or ping intended carrier. Decide BEFORE taking Roshan
During Roshan Fight
- HP callouts: "Roshan 50%" → "Roshan 25%" → "Roshan low" at key thresholds
- Vision maintenance: One person watches entrances, calls "Enemies coming!" if contested
- Ability usage: Alt-click important abilities (Echo Slam, Black Hole) to coordinate usage
- Positioning calls: "Spread out" for Roshan slam, "Get back" if someone is low
- Contest warning: If enemies approach: "Get ready to fight!" or "Leave pit!" depending on situation
Post-Roshan
- Aegis distribution: Ping Aegis carrier, confirm they picked it up
- Cheese/Refresher: Call out who takes Cheese and Refresher Shard (later game)
- Exit strategy: "Get back!" if enemies nearby, or "Push now!" if you want to siege
- Next objective: Clear communication - push lane, smoke, defend, or farm
- Aegis timer: Note when Aegis expires (5 minutes). Remind carrier at 4:30, 4:45
- Next Roshan window: Call out respawn window (8-11 minutes). Plan around it
Critical Roshan Callouts
These callouts can mean the difference between securing Aegis and losing the game:
- "Enemies have smoke!" when enemy smoke is detected near Roshan timing
- "They're doing Roshan!" when you spot enemy Roshan attempt
- "Contest Roshan!" when your team should fight for it
- "Don't contest!" when fighting would result in team wipe
- "Steal attempt!" when your team wants to steal with abilities
Positive Communication Tips
Maintaining positive communication isn't just about being nice - it's about winning more games. Teams with positive communication have higher win rates because players focus on the game instead of arguing.
Praise Good Plays
Use "Well played!" after successful ganks, clutch saves, good ward spots, and won teamfights. Positive reinforcement builds team morale and encourages more good plays.
Focus on Future Actions
Instead of dwelling on past mistakes, communicate what to do next. "Let's ward their jungle" is better than "Why did you die there?"
Good: "Let's group up for next push"
Offer Suggestions, Not Commands
Frame communication as suggestions: "Maybe we can smoke?" vs "We should smoke". People respond better to collaborative language.
Suggesting: "Can we get a ward here?"
Take Shared Responsibility
Use "we" instead of "you" when discussing mistakes. "We should have backed" vs "You should have backed" maintains team unity.
Unifying: "We need to pressure their carry more"
Acknowledge Difficult Situations
When games are hard, acknowledge it: "Tough game but we can win this". This validates teammates' frustration while maintaining hope.
Share Information, Not Blame
Communicate facts and information rather than assigning blame. "Carry has no buyback" is useful. "Carry wasted gold" is not.
Useless: "You let him farm BKB"
Ignore or Mute Toxicity
Don't engage with toxic players. Mute them immediately and focus on the game. Arguing wastes time and mental energy.
Time Your Communication
Don't distract teammates during fights. Save strategic discussions for downtime between fights or while farming.
Good timing: Discussing plan while respawning
Celebrate Small Wins
Acknowledge progress: won fight, took tower, secured ward. Small victories maintain momentum even in losing games.
Stay Calm Under Pressure
Maintain composed communication during base defense, buyback situations, and critical moments. Panic spreads to teammates.
Composed: "Defend high ground, wait for cooldowns"
Use Voice Chat Wisely
Voice chat is powerful but can be overwhelming. Keep calls short and relevant. Don't talk constantly - leave room for others to communicate.
Bad voice usage: Constant commentary on everything
Lead by Example
Be the teammate you want to have. Make good calls, stay positive, communicate clearly. Others often follow the tone you set.
Why Positive Communication Wins Games
Reduces Tilt
Players perform better when not tilted. Positive environment keeps everyone focused on winning.
Encourages Coordination
Teams that communicate positively execute strategies better because everyone wants to work together.
Enables Comebacks
Positive teams don't give up. Many comeback victories happen because team stayed positive when behind.
Builds Trust
When teammates trust each other, they make bolder plays and commit to team fights more confidently.
Avoiding Toxicity
Toxicity Loses Games
Toxic communication is the fastest way to lose winnable games. When players argue, flame, or spam pings, the team stops coordinating and individual performance drops. Here's how to avoid contributing to toxicity.
Never Do These
Ping Spam After Mistakes
Repeatedly pinging a teammate after they die or make a mistake tilts them and helps nothing. They know they made a mistake - pinging 5 times only makes them play worse.
Instead: Say nothing or "Unlucky" and move on
All-Chat Flame
Never use all-chat to complain about or flame your teammates. This gives enemies information and tilts your team. All-chat should only be for "gg" and friendly banter.
Instead: Keep team issues in team chat or say nothing
Blame Game
"This is your fault", "You lost us the game", "Report [player]" - blame accomplishes nothing and guarantees your team plays worse.
Instead: Focus on what your team can still do to win
Giving Up Callouts
"GG end", "We lost", "Just afk" - defeatist communication kills team morale and prevents comebacks that were still possible.
Instead: "We can win if we defend and take one good fight"
Ability/Item Criticism
"Why did you skill that?", "Your build is terrible", "Wrong items" - criticizing builds mid-game helps nothing and distracts from gameplay.
Instead: Adapt your play to your team's actual builds
Spam Unwanted Advice
Constantly telling teammates what to do, especially after they ignore your suggestion, is micromanaging that creates resentment.
Instead: Make suggestion once, then respect their decision
Sarcastic "Well Played"
Using "Well played!" sarcastically after mistakes is passive-aggressive toxicity that tilts teammates just as much as direct flame.
Instead: Save "Well played!" for actual good plays only
Rank/Stats Flame
"You're only [rank]", "Check his profile", "1k player" - rank shaming is toxic and irrelevant to the current game.
Instead: Everyone in your game is approximately your skill level
Threat of Reports
"Report [player]", "I'm reporting you", "Enjoy your ban" - report threats create hostile environment and don't improve behavior.
Instead: Just report quietly after game if warranted
Arguing During Game
Text arguments waste time you should spend playing. Every second typing is a second not farming, warding, or positioning.
Instead: Mute and focus on your own gameplay
When Someone is Toxic to You
Don't Respond
Never argue back or defend yourself. Engaging with toxic players encourages them and wastes your focus. Toxic players want a reaction - don't give them one.
Mute Immediately
Use the scoreboard to mute text and voice chat from toxic players as soon as they start. Don't give them multiple chances - one toxic message is enough to justify a mute.
Continue Communicating with Team
Keep making good calls, pings, and chat wheel usage for non-toxic teammates. Don't let one toxic player stop you from communicating with the other three.
Focus on Your Game
Redirect mental energy to your own gameplay. Every death you prevent, every good play you make, increases your chance to win despite the toxicity.
Report After Game
After the match ends, report toxic behavior. The report system works - serial toxic players do get banned. Your report contributes to community health.
Self-Check: Are You Contributing to Toxicity?
Honestly evaluate your own communication. If you answer "yes" to any of these, you might be part of the toxicity problem:
- Do you ping teammates multiple times after mistakes?
- Do you criticize teammates' builds or skill choices mid-game?
- Do you say "gg" before the ancient falls?
- Do you complain about teammates in all-chat?
- Do you argue when teammates disagree with your calls?
- Do you blame teammates for lost fights or deaths?
- Do you tell teammates they're bad or trash?
- Do you use chat wheel sarcastically to mock mistakes?
If you answered yes to any of these, work on eliminating these behaviors. Your win rate will improve when your communication improves.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the different ping types in Dota 2?
Dota 2 has several ping types: Normal Ping (Alt+Click) for general information, Attack Ping (Ctrl+Alt+Click) to signal aggression, Danger Ping for warnings, X Mark for retreat, and Smiley Face for acknowledgment. Each ping type has a specific purpose for team communication. Use the right ping type to convey your message clearly - normal ping for information, attack ping for targets, danger ping for threats.
How do I call missing enemies effectively?
Call missing immediately when enemies leave your lane - within 3 seconds if possible. Alt+Click on enemy hero portraits at the top of the screen, use chat wheel "Missing" command, or type in team chat. The fastest method is alt-clicking the enemy portrait. Always update when enemies reappear by alt-clicking again. For extended missing (30+ seconds), repeat the call every 15-20 seconds to keep team aware.
What should I communicate before taking Roshan?
Before Roshan, communicate: (1) enemy positions - where they are visible, (2) vision status - do we have wards and did we deward, (3) who has buyback available, (4) who will take Aegis, (5) the plan after Roshan (push lane, smoke, back). Use "Roshan" chat wheel, ping the pit, and get confirmations from team. Always scan Roshan pit before entering to ensure it's clear of enemies.
How can I avoid toxic communication?
Avoid toxicity by: (1) Never ping spam teammates after mistakes, (2) Focus on future actions not past mistakes, (3) Don't use all-chat to flame your team, (4) Offer suggestions not commands, (5) Mute toxic players immediately without engaging. Use "we" instead of "you" when discussing issues. Keep communication constructive and forward-looking. Remember: arguing wastes time you should spend playing the game.
How do I customize my chat wheel?
Customize chat wheel in Settings → Options → Chat Wheel. You can set up multiple chat wheels with different phrases. Recommended additions include: "Blink Dagger ready", "Ultimate ready", "Buyback ready/down", "Group up", "Spread out", "Farm", and "Defend". Having the right phrases on your chat wheel makes communication faster and more effective. Set up phrases you use frequently in your role.
What information can I alt-click?
You can alt-click almost everything in Dota 2: enemy hero portraits (missing/returned), your abilities (cooldowns), items in inventory/shop, your gold amount, buyback status, Roshan timer, glyph cooldown, ward stock, enemy items and abilities, your level, HP/mana bars, scan availability, and game time. Alt-clicking is the fastest way to share information. Get in the habit of alt-clicking cooldowns, items, and enemy information constantly.
How do I communicate during smoke ganks?
Before smoke: announce "Gathering for smoke", ping meeting point, share target, check readiness (alt-click ultimates/mana), wait for confirmations. During smoke (35s): minimal communication, move together, ping path if needed, attack ping target when found, clear "Go" or "Stun now" for initiation. After smoke: if successful say "Push now" or next objective, if failed say "Get back" and regroup. Clear communication is essential - smoke ganks fail most often due to poor coordination.
Should I use voice chat or text/pings?
Use both strategically. Voice chat is best for: complex strategies, teamfight coordination, urgent calls during fights, and extended explanations. Pings and chat wheel are best for: quick callouts, missing calls, objective pings, and international games where teammates may not share your language. Don't talk constantly on voice - keep calls short and relevant. Many players perform better with pings/chat wheel because voice can be overwhelming or distracting.
