Buyback Timing Guide
Master buyback mechanics and strategic timing for game-winning decisions
Understanding Buyback Mechanics
Buyback Cooldown
8 minutes
After using buyback, you must wait exactly 8 minutes before you can use it again. This cooldown is fixed and cannot be reduced by any means. Managing this cooldown is crucial for high-stakes late game scenarios.
Buyback is one of the most powerful and game-changing mechanics in Dota 2. It allows you to instantly respawn at your fountain after death by spending gold, giving you a second chance in critical moments. However, it comes with significant penalties and costs that must be carefully considered.
Gold Cost Calculation
Buyback Cost Formula
100 + (Net Worth / 13)
The buyback cost scales with your net worth (total gold earned from all sources). As you get richer, buyback becomes more expensive. Early game buybacks are cheap, but late game buybacks on farmed carries can cost 2000+ gold.
Net Worth Examples
Early Game (10-15 min)
Net Worth: ~5,000 gold
Buyback Cost: ~485 gold
Relatively cheap, but rarely worth it unless defending critical objectives.
Mid Game (20-30 min)
Net Worth: ~13,000 gold
Buyback Cost: ~1,100 gold
Moderate cost. Consider carefully for important team fights or high ground defense.
Late Game (35+ min)
Net Worth: ~26,000 gold
Buyback Cost: ~2,100 gold
Very expensive. Essential for carries to always have buyback gold available.
Understanding the Formula
- Base Cost: 100 gold minimum - even if you have zero net worth, buyback costs at least 100 gold
- Net Worth Component: Your total net worth (all gold earned) divided by 13
- Dynamic Scaling: As you farm more and increase net worth, buyback becomes progressively more expensive
- No Upper Limit: There's no cap on buyback cost - extremely farmed heroes can pay 2500+ gold
Buyback Penalties
25% Gold Penalty
After buying back, you lose 25% of your current unreliable gold. This is in addition to the buyback cost itself. If you have 1000 unreliable gold, you'll lose an additional 250 gold.
Increased Respawn Time
When you die again after buying back, your respawn time is increased by 25 seconds (plus your normal death time). This can result in very long death timers late game.
No Gold or XP on Death
You do not earn any gold or experience while dead after buying back. This effectively pauses your farm and can put you behind if the buyback doesn't achieve its objective.
When Buyback Is Worth It
1. Defending High Ground (Tier 3 Towers/Barracks)
This is the #1 situation where buyback is almost always worth it:
- Losing barracks permanently weakens your creeps and gives enemy team mega creeps advantage
- High ground defense is significantly easier than attacking - the terrain advantage is huge
- Even if you die again, preventing barracks loss is usually worth the cost
- Communicate with team - multiple buybacks can turn a lost fight into a won defense
2. Late Game Team Fights (40+ Minutes)
In ultra-late game, buyback becomes essential:
- One fight wins: After 40+ minutes, one team wipe often ends the game
- Respawn times: Death timers are 90-120 seconds - too long to defend without buyback
- Carry protection: Carry players should ALWAYS have buyback gold saved
- Race to throne: Buyback can be the difference between defending and losing ancient
3. Critical Objectives (Roshan, Ancient, Mega Creeps)
When major objectives are at stake:
- Roshan contest: If enemy is taking Roshan and you can buyback to steal/contest, often worth it
- Ancient defense: Obviously worth it if your ancient is under attack
- Preventing mega creeps: Buying back to stop the last set of barracks from falling
- Tournament point: In critical games, sometimes buying back to secure an important kill is justified
4. Winning Team Fight After Initial Deaths
Strategic buybacks during active fights:
- Your team is winning the fight 4v5 but you died first - buyback to ensure victory
- Enemy team has used major ultimates/cooldowns - buyback to capitalize
- You're the carry and your team needs your damage to finish the fight
- Buying back to save multiple teammates who would otherwise die
When NOT to Buyback
Common Buyback Mistakes
- Revenge kills: Never buyback just to get a kill on the enemy who killed you - it's almost never worth it
- Lost fights: If your team is getting wiped and multiple enemies are alive, buying back often just feeds another death
- Early game (pre-20 min): Unless defending tier 3, early game buybacks are rarely justified - save that gold for items
- No clear objective: Buying back without a plan (defend tower, take Roshan, win fight) usually wastes gold
- When you'll die instantly: If enemy team has saved abilities for you or you're too low HP, don't buyback to insta-die
- Solo buyback: Buying back when all 4 teammates are dead rarely accomplishes anything
Tracking Enemy Buyback Status
Buyback Status Indicators
Dota 2 shows buyback availability with a gold icon next to enemy hero portraits. Green = has buyback, Gray = on cooldown or insufficient gold.
Why Track Enemy Buybacks
- Commit to fights: If key enemy heroes (carries/cores) don't have buyback, you can commit more aggressively
- High ground pushes: Push when enemy carry has no buyback - they can't defend effectively
- Roshan timing: Take Roshan when enemies lack buyback to contest
- Gank priorities: Focus heroes who can't buyback - their death has more impact
- Cooldown windows: After enemy uses buyback, you have 8 minutes where they're vulnerable
Communication Tips
Call out enemy buyback status to your team:
- "Enemy carry no buyback" - push high ground now
- "Mid just used buyback" - we can fight in 60 seconds when they die again
- "Enemy supports have no gold for buyback" - commit to this fight
- "All enemy buybacks on cooldown" - perfect time to take objectives
Late Game Buyback Management for Carries
The Golden Rule for Carries
ALWAYS save buyback gold
After 35 minutes, carry players should never spend gold below their buyback cost unless absolutely necessary. Not having buyback late game on your carry is one of the most common ways to lose.
Carry Buyback Best Practices
Calculate Your Buyback Cost
- Press Alt while hovering over the buyback button to see exact cost
- Keep mental note of how much gold you need (usually 1500-2500 late game)
- Don't spend below this threshold even for tempting items
Item Priority Management
- Save first: Always ensure buyback gold before purchasing luxury items
- Big purchases: If buying expensive item (5000+ gold), make sure you'll still have buyback after
- Selling items: Consider selling low-value items to secure buyback gold if needed
- Farm patterns: Adjust farming to ensure you maintain buyback threshold
Position-Specific Considerations
- Position 1 Carry: Buyback is MANDATORY past 35 minutes - highest priority
- Position 2 Mid: Should have buyback for important fights - second priority
- Position 3 Offlane: Buyback when defending high ground or ultra-late game
- Position 4/5 Supports: Rarely have gold for buyback - don't stress about it early
Team Coordination
- Announce your buyback status: "I have buyback" or "No buyback yet, farming 500 more"
- Don't take risky fights if your carry has no buyback
- Supports should help carry maintain buyback by giving them farm priority late game
- Voice chat: "Carry has buyback, we can commit to this fight"
Pro Tips for Buyback Timing
Check Before Fighting
Before major fights, glance at buyback availability for both your team and enemies. This information shapes how aggressively you can play.
Buyback + TP
After buying back, you spawn at fountain. Always have TP scroll ready or buy one immediately to get back to fight. TP cooldown is crucial.
Anticipate the Fight
If you're about to die and buyback is justified, mentally prepare to buyback instantly. Hesitation costs precious seconds in fights.
8-Minute Cooldown Tracking
After using buyback, note the game time. Add 8 minutes to know when buyback is available again. Plan your next 8 minutes accordingly.
Bait Buybacks
Advanced play: Trade objectives to force enemy buybacks. If they buyback for tier 1 tower, you have 8 minutes to pressure other objectives.
Double Buyback Timing
In ultra-late game, if you buyback, fight, die, and respawn naturally - your buyback is still on cooldown! Plan around the 8-minute window.
Track Buyback Cooldowns with Our Timer Tool
Never lose track of buyback availability again. Our DotaSense tool helps you track your own and enemy buyback cooldowns with visual indicators and audio alerts for when buyback becomes available.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can buyback cooldown be reduced by any items or abilities?
No. The 8-minute buyback cooldown is fixed and cannot be reduced by any means - no items, abilities, or talents can decrease it. This is intentional game design to prevent buyback spam.
Does the 25% gold penalty apply to reliable gold?
No. The 25% penalty only applies to unreliable gold (gold from lane creeps, neutral creeps, hero kills, and buildings). Reliable gold from sources like Roshan, Hand of Midas, track gold, and hero abilities is not penalized.
What happens if I don't have enough gold to buyback?
The buyback button will be grayed out and you cannot use it. You must wait until you accumulate enough gold (either from passive gold gain, or gold from allies killing enemies/creeps) before buyback becomes available.
Can I see if enemies have buyback available?
Yes! Look at the top bar where enemy heroes are displayed. A green gold coin icon means they have buyback available (both the gold and no cooldown). A gray icon means they either lack gold or buyback is on cooldown.
Is buyback worth it if I'm a support with no gold?
Generally no, unless you're defending ancient or your hero has a critical ultimate needed to win the fight (e.g., Enigma Black Hole, Tidehunter Ravage). Supports should prioritize buying items over saving for buyback until ultra-late game.
How do I calculate my exact buyback cost in-game?
Hold Alt and hover over your buyback button (bottom right corner of the screen). This displays the exact gold cost required to buyback based on your current net worth. The cost updates in real-time as you earn gold.
